If you are advertising a job opening at your company, you are probably receiving many applications. But you still may not be hearing from the best people. That’s because many of these people are not actively looking for work since they are currently employed. They may have their ear to the ground, ready to move if the right opportunity comes along, but they are not sending out resumes, yet.
These are the passive job candidates. The question for your business is, how do you reach these people and entice them to come work for you? There are several things you can do to improve your candidate pool.
Using Social Media
This is a great way to find and to learn about passive job candidates. You can find out about their work history, interests, and what skills they have on social media. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are all great sources for information gathering and for contacting people.
Moreover, there are social media groups centered around interests and professions, which can help to locate people. Being proactive in these groups by connecting with potential job candidates and developing relationships can lead to a great job candidate.
Sell Your Company
In attracting passive candidates, the roles are reversed. Instead of the candidate selling themselves to the company, the company needs to sell itself to the person. So initially, you don’t want to focus on what skills and experience the candidate possesses. You want to focus on what the company can offer to the person, exciting career opportunities and projects are available at your company. Any or all of those options may strike a chord and be the one thing that entices the person to make a move.
Using the Right Approach
You can draw the person out and engage their interest by asking them about their current situation and career objectives. Ask them about their current position and how fulfilling and challenging they find the work to be. Does it meet their expectations, and if not, what kind of job would? Ask them if they feel like they are progressing in their career or are reaching a dead end. What is their idea of the ideal job? If their current position is not the ideal situation, what would they need to make it ideal?
Using these types of questions will help you learn about problems people have with their current job and how another job might be able to address those problems.
