Don’t Overlook Mastering These Skills

Most jobs today are specialized. They each require a unique set of skills. There are some skills, however, that people use in almost every kind of job. These skills carry over across different jobs and different industries. Being able to master these skills and show your proficiency in them will help you in your current job and in any future job pursuits.

Computer Skills

Almost all employers expect their employees to be proficient in basic computer skills. At a minimum, most people should be familiar with navigating the Internet, have a basic understanding of computer programs such as Excel, a spreadsheet program, and Microsoft Office, as well as knowing their way around social media and email. If you have not mastered these skills at a minimum, you will be at a distinct disadvantage in the job market. Employers don’t want to teach these skills to new employees.

The more computer skills you have mastered, the more valuable you will be to your company. For example, knowing how to use computer programs like Powerpoint, FrontPage, Access, Project, Adobe Photoshop and FileMaker Pro will make you worth a lot more to your employer. These skills can be useful in many different jobs across a number of industries.

Solving Problems

This is an especially valuable skill for any business. No matter what kind of job you have, you will be confronted with problems that need to be solved. Knowing how to do this will make you just about indispensable.

In confronting any problem, you need to know how first to define exactly what the problem is and understand the issue you are facing. You have to know whether there is even anything you can do about the problem. You have to know how to look at a problem from different angles, to see the various ways that you can define it. Then you have to know how to get at the true root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms. Being able to generate multiple solutions to the problem in order to identify which would be the best, involves knowing how to prioritize the solutions.

Then, you have to make a decision and implement it. Finally, you need to know how to set up some means of measuring the effectiveness of your solution.

This is the basic method for solving just about any type of problem you may encounter, and knowing how to use it will make you a valuable worker at any company. Experience will help in this skill, but being able to efficiently solve problems without hand holding from your manager goes a long way.

Following Directions

This may sound like a simple task, but it involves skills as well. The most important skill here is listening, focusing on what the person is saying so that you understand what to do. Another skill involved is questioning, knowing what additional information you need to follow the directions well. There is a balance between asking good questions and asking too many questions. Managers don’t want to see employees in their office with a question every five minutes. Do your best to listen to the original task and if you do have questions, plan them out for when you get to talk to the appropriate parties.
