Corporate culture is an issue that is getting more attention at the best companies. Culture is all about the goals, values and vision that define a company. It’s about what the company stands for. Different companies have different cultures.

Although cultures may be different, the way to achieve a strong company culture is the same – shared values and working toward a common goal. In order to do that, it is important that employees have good relationships. It becomes very difficult to work toward a common goal if people are not working together. With that in mind, here are a few ways for you to improve relationships with others where you work.

1. Don’t be impulsive.
At some point, someone may say something that aggravates you, and you may be tempted to blurt out a rebuttal. Or you may see something that another person has done that annoys you and may be tempted to tell them about it. Before you do, take a little time to think about it. In fact, letting your emotions settle down after a day or two can be more beneficial. Before you impulsively react, think about the situation and the best way to respond, a way that won’t make the situation worse.

2. Don’t assume.
Many times we talk past each other without even realizing it. Good communication means making sure the other person really understands what you mean, and vice versa. Ask questions and take time to explain. Don’t assume they know exactly what you are talking about.

3. Give others time to speak.
When someone else is talking, don’t interrupt to add your commentary or observations. Let them finish what they have to say first. This is just common courtesy, and it shows that you respect them.

4. Take time to listen.
When someone else is talking, focus on what they are saying. Show them you are listening by looking them in the eye and nodding occasionally. Don’t let your mind wander or think about what you are going to say next. Pay attention to the other person.

5. Don’t gripe.
Complainers can be a real downer. They cast a pall over the whole atmosphere. No one wants to associate with them when all they do is gripe. Yes, there are things to complain about in all workplaces. But do it constructively, as a way to come up with improvements and solutions.
