So, you’ve got your website up and running. It’s attractive, well written and well organized. You have it optimized for the search engines. But, for all this, you are still not generating the traffic you want.
What can you do to get more people to come to your website? Mary Rosenbaum, a certified personal branding strategist and career coach, has a few ideas.
One thing is to make sure that you are continually updating the material you have on your site. Whether by blogging, putting up news articles or video, you want to keep the information you have fresh and relevant to get people to come to your site and keep them coming back. Also, by doing this, you get the opportunity to link to other sites who may link to you in return. And by updating with more information, you get the opportunity to add more keywords that will be picked up by the search engines. Videos and photographs are especially attractive to search engines.
Another way to get more traffic is to get more links from other sites. One quick way to do this is to promote your Web page, your blog, or your newsletter at social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
You also can ask customers to make listings for your business on rating sites such as angieslist.com, yelp.com, or judysbook.com. Good reviews not only bring people to your website, they also provide great advertising.
Look for other blogs that you can post on as a guest blogger. And you can offer other bloggers the opportunity to post on your site.
You also can list your website on online directories and with data aggregators. These are organizations that compile business information into a database. Some of these are infogroup.com, databyacxiom.com, and localeze.com.
You can also do online book reviews on sites such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
You also could work to create reciprocal links with other sites. But when you do this, you need to do it carefully, making sure that the other sites have good content and good reputations. You also want to make sure that these sites will attract the kind of people you are looking for as customers.
Rosenbaum says to avoid using “link farms.” These are mechanisms that create links between unrelated sites just to increase traffic. But they are generally a waste of time because they will do little to attract the kind of people you want to come to your site, and sites that used them are penalized by search engines.
