You may be wondering if you should set up a wellness program for your employees.

You also may be wondering just what a wellness program is.

A wellness program is just about any program or process that improves employees’ capacity for health. They could be as simple and one-shot as a lunch that talks about how to eat more healthily and exercise more. It also could entail an on-site program aimed to reduce obesity. Some companies even put in workout facilities on site.

Other options include offering to pay all or a part of  gym memberships for your employees. Blood screenings (for hepatitis, diabetes and other health issues) also qualify as wellness programs.

You may want to consider offering management and weight loss seminars and classes on site. Sure, you’ll have a better looking workforce as a result, but your bottom line also will improve because your now-skinnier workers take fewer sick days, don’t visit the doctor as much, and are more productive.

You’ll also more than likely notice that camaraderie and morale grows as your employee’s health improves.

Companies that offer wellness programs also tend to be more attractive to job seekers. Current employees also will feel more loyal to you; turnover could even decrease!

To start a company wellness program, follow these steps:

  • Offer incentives for participation. Encourage participants to set goals and reward them when they’re reached.
  • Encourage employees to focus on only one healthy goal at a time – eating an apple a day, for example, or walking for just 10 minutes. Meeting small goals truly does help people continue working toward more and harder goals.
  • Consider offering baseline health assessment screenings (diabetes, cholesterol, triglycerides, hypertension, etc) at reduced or no cost to participants.
  • Ask employees for their ideas and feedback
