There’s plenty of information out there to help candidates interview for positions, but what about help for the interviewer/hiring manager?

If you’re looking for an office assistant for your firm, chances are you received dozens – if not hundreds – of applications for the position. To help you cull through the resumes, follow these tips:

First, you’ll want to put together a list of the critical skills, education and background you must have in the person who fills the position. These must be critical to being able to do the job successfully.

As you go through resumes/applications, you can weed out all those applicants who don’t match your requirements exactly. (If no one matches the requirements, you may need to be more flexible….)

You’ll then want to call from five to 10 of those candidates who fit your criteria. It’s here that you see how the candidate responds to questions and if the hours and salary are within the candidate’s range.

Once you bring people in for an interview, here are some questions you might want to ask the candidates:

  • What computer skills do you have? What programs are you familiar with? How would you rate your expertise on them
  • How do you feel about working in a team environment? Do you feel most comfortable working alone or in a group?
  • You’ll be reporting to three managers. What will you do when they give you projects with the same deadlines?
  • You may be supervising two or three people. Tell me about your experience as a supervisor.
  • Describe your perfect supervisor.
  • How do you meet goals you’ve set for yourself? Tell me about a time you set a goal and didn’t meet it. What did you do?
  • Tell me about a time you improved a task, process or job on which you were working?
  • Tell me about how you work to get along with people you find difficult.
  • How do you handle stress? Give me an example of a stressful situation at work and what you did to manage it.
  • In what kind of work environment do you do your best work?
