When it comes to rewarding your hourly – or even your temporary – employees, you don’t always need to think of raises. There are other, more creative and far less expensive, ways to show that you appreciate your hourly workers’ hard work. Read below for some ideas:
- It’s amazing what free food does for morale. Rewarding a department or division of your company with a pizza party at the end of the month, or when goals are met/exceeded is an amazingly simple but effective way to show your team members that you care and that you noticed their extra efforts.
- Tokens of appreciation also can go a long way to helping employees feel appreciated. Offer tokens for time off or for apparel. Give free movie passes or gift certificates to a nearby coffee shop or even deli (free lunch!)
- Flexible work hours also are a great way to reward employees. If possible, let them know that everyone can work for eight hours anytime between, for example, 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. for a few days after a big goal is reached. Or tell your staff members that if everyone meets a certain goal by a certain date, X number of Fridays in the summer can be taken as additional paid-for vacation days.
- Consider hosting a company-pai movie night for everyone. This helps people socialize after work and also contributes to building stronger bonds among co-workers (be sure to have enough tickets for at least one friend or family member of each employee).
- Think about providing a paid-for holiday vacation for your exceptional top performers. Before you scream “too expensive,” consider that a few thousand dollars spent once a year on a handful of employees is far less costly than increasing hourly wages. (The math: say you have 100 employees and you give each a raise of $3 an hour. That’s $300 more an hour, times 2080 – the number of work hours in 52 weeks – and you come to $624K more spent each year. Even just a raise of $1 an hour comes to an extra $208K extra. Now compare that to the, for example, $20K-$30K you’d spend on a vacation.)
- Can you offer free transportation to work to your hourly employees? The relative cost of transportation for an hourly employee in Southern California is huge. Free transportation to work is an excellent perk.
