Put yourself in the shoes of an HR recruiter. Many of them receive hundreds of resumes for a single open position. After they eliminate candidates who are clearly unqualified or whose résumés are riddled with errors or poor formatting, they may still be left with dozens of documents to review.
At this point, yours has to stand out, but here’s the catch: most résumés use the exact same language. Words like experienced, motivated, and results-oriented appear everywhere. Once meant to spark interest, these buzzwords have become so overused that they’ve lost their meaning. Today, they function more like filler than value.
The Most Overused Buzzwords
According to LinkedIn’s Analytics team, after reviewing 85 million U.S. LinkedIn profiles, these ten phrases show up far more than they should:
- Extensive experience
- Innovative
- Motivated
- Results-oriented
- Dynamic
- Proven track record
- Team player
- Fast-paced
- Problem solver
- Entrepreneurial
It’s not that these terms are inherently bad. The problem is that everyone uses them, and without context, they tell a recruiter nothing. Of course you’re “motivated”, you applied for the job. And calling yourself “dynamic” can make you sound more like the Energizer Bunny than a professional.
Don’t Delete Them, Define Them
Not every buzzword needs to disappear from your résumé or LinkedIn profile. What they do need is supporting evidence. Instead of relying on vague descriptors, show the recruiter what those traits actually look like in action.
For example:
- Instead of team player, try:
“Led a sales team of 15 to increase quarterly revenue by 75%.” - Instead of problem solver, try:
“Reengineered inventory processes, reducing fulfillment delays by 40% and saving the company $250K annually.”
Suddenly, the buzzword becomes believable and powerful.
Why This Matters
Recruiters aren’t just scanning for skills, they’re scanning for impact. When a résumé is filled with generic language, the eye skips right past it. But when your claims are backed by numbers, achievements, and clear examples, your résumé becomes memorable.
You can always elaborate during the interview, but the résumé is your chance to earn that opportunity. Don’t let empty wording get in your way.
