At the end of last year, we offered some reasons candidates may be “ghosting” you. By way of reminder, ghosting occurs when candidates disappear without a trace, abandoning the recruitment process. This time around, we’re offering some proactive suggestions for “ghostbusting.”
Stay Transparent Through the Process
A Monster survey indicated that as many as a third of candidates have ditched companies because the hiring managers lied to them. You can avoid this entirely simply by being honest. Put all your cards on the table when it comes to salary, required travel, and your timeline for reaching a hiring decision.
Request Total Transparency from Your Candidates
Once you commit to telling applicants the whole truth and nothing but, it’s a lot easier to ask the same of them. One critical piece of information you have every right to ask of a candidate is where they stand with other potential employers. We say this information is critical because 40 percent of applicants who ghost a job opportunity do so because they get another job offer, according to a survey conducted by Indeed.
Keep in (High) Touch
In a recruiting environment where most or even all contact with candidates can be electronic or remote, it’s easy for a job seeker to slip out the back door, never to be heard from again. You can combat that by adopting what’s known as a “high touch” approach. This entails regular, personal contact with candidates – by phone or in person. The more responsive you are with resume follow-ups, hiring process updates, and the like, the better you’ll be able to evaluate candidates’ continued interest in the job.
Roll Out the Red Carpet
The other thing the high-touch approach to recruiting allows for is making a candidate feel welcome and desired. That can take the form of offering them a cup of coffee whenever you meet in person, taking them on a tour of the facilities, and giving them insight into your company’s culture. The goal here is building a relationship candidates won’t want to discard.
Streamline the Process
Research from CareerBuilder shows 60 percent of job seekers who’ve started an application abandoned it because it was taking too long. Streamline your application process to get candidates to the interview stage more quickly, and give them frequent timeline updates.
