Looking for an Office Job? Hone These 4 Skills

If you’re relatively new to the job market, you may not have a ton of experience to place on your resume. That’s ok because what employers are really looking for are candidates who have the necessary skills to get the job done. And if you’re looking for an office job, you’re bound to see a reference to “administrative skills.”

Administrative skills help keep an office going. And if you can demonstrate mastery of the four skills listed below, you’ll jump to the top of the candidate list for an office position.

1.      Typing

Most office jobs require successful candidates to be proficient with computers, and that involves a lot of typing. In fact, many positions, such as customer service representatives, data entry, and secretary/administrative duties, require you to hold a typing certification. Even if the job you are applying for doesn’t need one, having a typing certification will give you an edge over competitors. Check out our guide to getting a typing certificate here.

2.      Organization

Most office positions require the ability to keep your desk organized so that you can work efficiently. They may also call on candidates to handle calendars and appointments for their office colleagues. Someone with a high level of organizational skills can handle all these tasks, as well as filing, inventorying supplies, and other duties – all at the same time.

3.      Time Management

On its most basic level, time management involves getting to work on time and meeting deadlines. Next-level time management is being able to juggle multiple responsibilities efficiently. If you can show you have the ability to prioritize tasks to get them done properly and in as little time as possible, you’ll have a competitive edge.

4.      Customer Service

Even if you’re not in a call center or at a retail counter, you can demonstrate customer service skills by empathizing with customers and putting their needs first. Note that customers can be external (like people buying a product you make or a service you provide) or internal (your co-workers who need your help to meet business goals). And the most important customer skill is the honest desire to help others.
