It’s a good time to be a forklift operator. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of material-moving-machine operators, including forklift drivers, is expected to grow by 7% between 2020 and 2030. But you still need to put in some work to land a job, and perhaps the most important step in the process is the interview. To give yourself the best chance to make a good impression, check out some of these common interview questions for forklift operators.
What Kind of Forklifts Have You Operated?
This would be easy enough to list on a resume, but your interviewer will be listening for more than just a variety of machines. They’ll also be looking for cues that you know why some forklifts are better for certain jobs than others.
How Would You Make Sure You Were Operating Our Machines Safely?
Get specific with the safety protocols you’ve followed previously, like securing the cargo and double-checking that you have a clear path to back up.
What Would You Do If You Were Working on a Tight Deadline, And You Were Asked to Switch Projects for a Moment?
This question is about multitasking, but it’s even more about assessing how you would react to a stressful situation. Would you delegate the job? Would you explain to the manager that you were already working on a priority project? Whatever answer you provide, be ready to not only explain what you would do, but also why.
Tell Me About a Time You Operated a Forklift Incorrectly.
There’s a lot going on in this question. You’re being asked to own up to a mistake, explain that you understand the consequences of making that mistake and describe the steps you took to make sure it never happened again. Be honest and emphasize how a bad experience has made you a better candidate.
Describe a Time You Made a Suggestion That Led to an Improvement in Your Company
Your value to a company comes from more than how well you operate a forklift. Interviewers asking this question are looking for signs you think outside of the crate, so to speak. They also may be searching for hints you might be a good team leader – or even a manager – one day.
