What is burnout? It is, simply put, a feeling of exhaustion. It doesn’t happen overnight, where you wake up one morning feeling burned out. It’s a gradual process.
And this feeling can manifest itself in different ways for different people. For some, it is having a feeling of tiredness, being drained of energy all the time. For others, it might be headaches or muscle pain, for still others it can be a loss of appetite or trouble sleeping.
People also feel a sense of failure, a loss of motivation. They become more cynical, no longer feeling satisfied by what they do. If you are experiencing burnout, here are some things you can do.
Find what is causing it.
Often conditions at work lead to burnout – the workload has become too heavy and you feel overwhelmed. You are not recognized for your work, or you feel your manager prefers others over you, or you feel your co–workers are not real team players.
It could also be you are no longer finding satisfaction in your job, that you no longer feel challenged, or that the work really matters.
Imagine what engagement is like.
Think about the kind of work and conditions that would make you feel engaged with your work and excited about it. What things would have to change in order for this to happen? Is there anything you can do to make those kinds of changes?
Consider your goals.
Think about the goals you have set for yourself, both short term and long term. Are these goals still important to you? Have you set too many of them? Are they realistic? It may be time to take a closer look at the goals you have set for yourself, to narrow them down to just one or two that really matter to you, and then figure out how you are going to achieve them using a step–by–step approach.
Time for decision making.
If after you have done all of the above you still feel you have made no progress, it is time to make some decisions. For example, do you need to rethink your job – should you look for new opportunities?
