Avoid These Mistakes When You Make a Job Offer

You have a job candidate whom you really like. You have interviewed him or her several times. He has met your team. Everything has gone well, and the person seems an excellent fit for the job. All that is left is to make an offer. Simple, right? Not so fast. It may look like a no-brainer, but if you are not careful, things can still fall through. Here are some things to watch out for.

1. Trying to lowball the candidate.

You may think that you are trying to save the company money, but this is a short-sighted way to go about it. If you do this, you are broadcasting to the candidate that you don’t really think much of their abilities and what they can contribute to the company.

You may believe that the candidate will negotiate from your initial offer, but if the offer is clearly way too low for the position, the candidate may simply withdraw from consideration. You have now created an adversary who will inform other potential job candidates about your actions, potentially harming your reputation and losing good candidates in the future.

Moreover, with social media, word of your tactics will spread much further.

2. Surprising the candidate.

After going through the entire interview process, the hiring manager should have a pretty good idea of what the candidate is making and what kind of salary range he or she is looking for, as well as what kind of benefits.

But again, in the interest of saving money, the hiring manager comes in at the low end of the scale, leading to protracted and stressful negotiations, and causing animosity. Not the best way to bring a new person on board.

3. Not giving enough information.

When you make an offer to a candidate, you need to spell out all of the terms associated with the job. For example, don’t forget to tell the person there is a signing bonus or a performance bonus.

4. Expecting an instant reply.

You don’t want to unduly pressure the candidate into making a quick decision. No one likes to be rushed. You need to give them an adequate amount of time to consider the offer.
