By now it is pretty much common knowledge that you need to ask questions during the job interview. Not asking questions about the job and the company will raise suspicions in the hiring manager’s mind about your interest in the job, as well as your general professional competency.
There are the general types of questions relating to the company culture and the job you will be doing, more nuts and bolts type things, such as the day to day duties and tasks of the job, the company’s management style and corporate culture and training opportunities.
But if you really want to stand out as a job candidate, you should think about asking more probing questions, queries that show your business acumen and your strategic thinking. Here are a few examples of those types of questions.
1. Can you tell me about the person you consider to be the best who ever did this job and why they were the best?
This shows you are thinking about what it takes to be successful in the job, and not only to be successful but to excel in it.
2. If someone were to exceed your expectations, what would they have to do?
This shows the hiring manager that you are really serious about excelling in the job. It also gives you information about what is important to the hiring manager, not just in terms of skills and experience, but as far as specific behaviors.
3. What are the most important attributes a person in this job should have?
Again, this gives you information about the skills needed to be successful.
4. How do you define success?
The answer to this question will give you some indication of what matters to the company and the goals the company is pursuing.
5. What keeps you awake at night?
This question gets at what really is important for the company, and more particularly what problems the company has that it is trying to solve.
6. How does someone coming into the company make an impact?
This is a question that gets at the key traits a person needs to be successful at the company and to make a contribution.
7. How does the company help its people to be successful?
This question is a way of learning about what support structures are in place at the company and what the company culture is like in terms of working together.
