According to a new study, to get workers more engaged and involved in their company, managers need to pay attention to what they have to say. In fact, the biggest reason for a lack of engagement and low morale of workers is the fact that they are ignored by the leadership of the company.

In fact, business experts say, this input from workers is absolutely necessary if a company is to improve its productivity and efficiency. Companies need to foster a culture where workers can speak up about the way things are done and ways that things can be done better.

The study’s authors contacted almost 700 professionals in the United States and Canada. Almost two-thirds of those who responded said that the biggest problem they faced was that company leaders took action without first seeking advice from their employees.

Employees want to be heard, according to the study’s authors, and when they are not, they are much less likely to give their full effort on a project.

Another thing that drains employee morale is when leaders seek input from employees, but then dismiss their ideas without even examining the ideas to see if they have any merit. More than one-third of those responding cited this as a reason why employees fail to become more involved.

Another reason for employee inertia is lack of recognition for extra effort and input. When employees receive no acknowledgment for their ideas and efforts, that can deliver a serious blow to morale. In the study, about one-fourth of those responding cited lack of recognition as a reason for low engagement.

When companies encourage a culture where employee contributions are sought after and valued, it usually results in greater employee morale, greater productivity and innovation. One example of this that the study’s authors cite is Starbucks. The idea for the Starbuck’s frappucino initially came from one of the frontline employees. At first, company executives turned down the idea, but after a manager encouraged them to give it a try, the company began making it. It is now a billion dollar seller for the company.
