You have been hired to fill a temporary position at a company, but you would like to turn the temporary work into a full-time job. What are some things you can do to increase your chances of being taken on full time?
Number one, and this may seem a bit obvious, but nonetheless needs to be stated – do a good job. That means going above and beyond the call of duty. You need to make sure you handle the basic responsibilities of the job, and handle them well. But you should also look for ways that you can go beyond the basic job description. Can you find ways to improve how your job is done? Can you increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the job?
Going above and beyond also means looking for other opportunities to make an impact. If a supervisor is looking for a volunteer to serve on a certain committee or to join a certain team doing a project, you should volunteer. Be flexible. If your supervisor needs you to work extra hours or different hours, you should be able to comply cheerfully. This is all part of showing that you are a team player.
If you see where the company is having problems, work to try and find a solution.
Also, find out as much as you can about the company. How do company leaders describe the mission, values and goals of the company? What kind of culture does it have – is it a firm hierarchy or more freewheeling, for example? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Who are the key management players? And don’t stop with just the company. Learn as much as you can about the industry the company is in as well.
Make sure your staffing agency knows that you want to work at the company full time. The agency has a good relationship with the company – the firm would not use them otherwise – and so can lobby with the company on your behalf. It is not always wise to let people in the company know directly that you want a full-time job there. This might create some tensions and situations that you don’t want.
Also, you can use the opportunity to network. Get to know the people who work at the company. They may be able to put in a good word for you in your department, or at another department that is looking for a full-time employee.
