When it comes to using a company’s e-mail system to communicate with your assignment managers and colleagues, or when using text messages to send messages back and forth between you and your staffing or assignment manager, professionalism counts!

We’ve found that too many of our temporary associates don’t understand that their temporary assignment is a real job, and therefore don’t treat it with the seriousness/respect it deserves. Remember: you can place your work with us on your resume. Future employers could well contact us for references.

What’s more, your current assignment could easily turn into a long-term assignment…or even turn into a more permanent position with our client.

That’s why it’s imperative that you treat any message you send us or your assignment supervisor/colleagues with as much attention to detail as possible.

To help you communicate in a manner that will help improve the quality of your messages as well as showcase your professionalism, follow the e-mail/text tips below.

  • Always check your messages for spelling and grammatical errors. This applies to texts as well as e-mail messages. Yes, it’s “harder” to make capital letters on a cell phone. Yes, many people have decided that it’s fine to use “u” for “you” in a text message. Our advice? When it comes to text messages, think of them as you would an important e-mail message and follow all proper spelling, capitalization and grammar rules.
  • You’re on the job, not talking with a friend. Avoid gossip. Don’t send/forward jokes. If you remember nothing else remember this: everything you do on the job is a reflection of your work ethic and professionalism. You want to shine at work, yes? So make sure your text and e-mail messages are as well-written as you can make them.
  • Texting is a very poor way to give or receive important and detailed information. If you need an answer to a multi-layered question or problem, it’s probably wise to e-mail the question instead of sending a text. If you’re not in an office and don’t have access to e-mail, call instead. In fact, you’d be surprised how quickly most questions and issues can be resolved with a simple phone call, instead of texting or e-mailing back and forth for several minutes!
  • E-mail and text messaging can make it way too easy to send off a message in anger. In fact, it’s almost always unwise to send any message when you’re upset. Take a deep breath and wait a few minutes – or even longer – before sending a message. It’s probably wisest to never send an angry text or e-mail.

The two best pieces of advice we can give when it comes to sending text or e-mail messages are 1)  to think before sending and 2) to proof all of your messages for errors.
