How to Be an Eco-Conscious Manufacturer

Many companies today are going green not only because it’s good for the environment. Although a financial liability in the short term, companies expect going green to pay off in the long run.

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, they are looking for products made by companies that are ecologically minded. Not only that, green company products are in demand by other companies because the other companies can then boast of being environmentally friendly.

One example of going green, as reported in an article in Industry Week, is the firm of Diamond Wipes International in Chino, California, which has recently installed almost 3,400 solar panels. The panels provide enough energy to run the entire company.

In addition to the panels, Diamond has also completed a number of environmentally friendly projects that cover both its manufacturing and distribution processes. The company is working toward certification by the Forest Stewardship Council, which monitors the path of wood products from forest to the stores to make sure companies are using sustainable manufacturing practices. Diamond has also switched from hard plastic packaging to biodegradable, compostable products.

The move, company officials told Industry Week, was made because consumers want to buy products from companies that are managed in an environmentally friendly way.

In the short term, it’s going to cost them money. The price tag on the solar panels was $1.6 million. They will get about 30 to 40 percent of that back from state and federal rebates, but it will take them eight to nine years to make up the total cost, according to Diamond representatives.

The company is putting in a large amount of resources in an investment for a small, long-term return. On the face of it, this does not seem like a prudent thing to do. But company officials believe it is good business. It’s good public relations, not just for consumers, but for Diamond’s business customers, and Diamond is basically a business-to-business company.

Since Diamond’s business customers also want to project a green image, they like buying from Diamond because they can then also say they are being more environmentally responsible.

Today, going green is a way of offering customers an extra incentive to use your company’s products. In the future, however, it is going to become standard business practice, according to Diamond officials. Companies that ignore the green wave, or delay their move to green practices, could do significant damage to their business, according to Diamond.
