If you think your short-term employees, whether they be seasonal workers on your own payroll or temporary workers you’ve brought in from a staffing service, don’t think that incentives won’t work for them: they will and they do!

In addition, hard work should be rewarded, whether an employee is with you for a few weeks or months or for decades.

Read below for some incentive ideas for short-term employees.

Because short-term employees work for you for just a few weeks or months, your incentives should focus on the achievement of goals that can be reached quickly.

Gift cards make great incentives. You can make the cards you offer as incentive as simple as gift cards to stores and restaurants. Let your short-term workers know that if they reach a certain goal in a certain amount of time or if they meet an important deadline, they will be given these cards as reward.

Bonus plans also can be great incentives for short-term workers. Give these employees a percentage of actual sales generated or a bonus for completing a project on time (or even – and especially – early!). If you hire seasonal employees, offer a financial bonus for staying on for the entire season (such as the holiday rush or during the hectic summer).

Paid-time off also can be a great incentive, even for seasonal or short-term employees. Such a plan could be set up so that if a worker works X number of shifts or hours, he or she may take a few hours off with pay. If you offer this type of incentive to your regular, long-term employees, offering this to your short-timers can go a long way to making them feel a real part of your team, even if they’re with you for just a few weeks. (Don’t forget, you may want to hire these folks again for the next busy season, so keep them happy in this one!)

Team awards are another great incentive. These are great for short- as well as long-term workers because having the chance to earn an award as part of a team 1) helps team members be accountable to each other and b) motivates each member to encourage his or her teammates.

If a team meets or exceeds a goal, reward its members with a special day off, or “field trip” to a nearby amusement park or restaurant.
