Ghosts might belong at Halloween, but they don’t belong in your job search.

Whether you’re searching for warehouse jobs in Ontario, CA, manufacturing opportunities in Grand Rapids, MI, or clerical positions in Redlands, CA, maintaining communication with your recruiter can help keep your job search moving forward.

This Halloween season, leave the disappearing acts to the ghosts. Here are simple ways to stand out for the right reasons.

  1. Respond even if the answer is no

You accepted another position. The schedule doesn’t work. You simply changed your mind.

That’s okay!

Instead of disappearing, send your recruiter a quick message letting them know. A simple response such as, “Thank you for reaching out, but I’m no longer interested in this opportunity,” gives your recruiter the information they need to move forward.

You don’t have to accept every opportunity to maintain a positive relationship. Clear communication goes a long way.

  1. Keep your recruiter updated

Things can change quickly during a job search. Your availability, transportation, preferred shift, pay expectations, or employment status may be different than when you first applied.

Let your recruiter know when something changes.

The more accurate your information is, the easier it is for them to focus on positions that fit what you’re looking for. It can also prevent you from receiving calls about jobs you already know won’t work for you.

  1. Don’t vanish before an interview

Few things create a scarier situation for a recruiter than confirming an interview with an employer, only for the candidate to disappear. 👻

If you can’t make it to an interview, contact your recruiter as soon as possible. Depending on the circumstances, they may be able to help you reschedule.

Emergencies happen. Plans change. Communicating early shows professionalism and respect for everyone’s time.

  1. Make it easy to reach you

You don’t have to answer every call immediately, especially if you’re working or busy. But during an active job search, regularly check your voicemail, text messages, and email.

Opportunities move quickly, and recruiters may need to confirm your interest or availability before submitting you for a position.

One extra tip: make sure your voicemail is set up and not full. If a recruiter can’t reach you or leave a message, you could miss an opportunity without even realizing it.

  1. Be honest about what you’re looking for

You don’t need to say yes to everything.

Tell your recruiter what matters to you, whether that’s a certain shift, location, pay range, type of work, or schedule. Being upfront can help your recruiter narrow the search and avoid sending you opportunities that aren’t a good match.

And if a position doesn’t interest you, politely declining is much better than agreeing to move forward and disappearing later.

  1. Follow through on the small things

Sometimes standing out has less to do with a perfect résumé and more to do with being dependable.

If your recruiter asks you to send a document, complete paperwork, confirm an interview, or call at a certain time, follow through as soon as you can. If something is preventing you from completing a step, communicate that too.

Small actions can demonstrate reliability before you even start the job.

  1. Stay connected even after the opportunity ends

Not every position is going to work out, and that doesn’t necessarily mean your relationship with your recruiter has to end.

If you aren’t selected for one job, staying in touch may help keep you in mind when another opportunity becomes available. A recruiter who already knows your experience, availability, and goals may be able to reconnect with you when something more suitable comes along.

Make Yourself Memorable Without Disappearing

You don’t need tricks or gimmicks to stand out during your job search. Being responsive, communicating clearly, following through, and keeping your recruiter updated can make the hiring process smoother for everyone involved.
