Last month, we posted about the possible benefits of working the second shift on a job. This time, let’s look at the perks of the third shift, also known as the night shift or the appealingly named “graveyard shift.”
To refresh your memory, most the workforce opts for the first shift (usually 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), while employees working the second shift are on the job from 4 or 5 p.m. to midnight or 1 a.m. The third shift usually runs from 11 p.m. or midnight to 7 or 8 a.m. While it shares some benefits with the second shift, the third shift has its own advantages.
Better Pay
Like the second shift, third-shift work often comes with a pay bump compared with normal business hours. But because the third shift is considered even less desirable than the second shift, you could make as much as 10% more working the third shift as opposed to the second. You may also be offered additional paid time off.
Less Competition
If your job search has become frustrating because of a lack of options, you might want to think about working the third shift. Again because of their lack of perceived desirability, third-shift jobs often have far fewer applicants, which gives you better odds.
A Unique Camaraderie
The third shift offers a special kind of work environment. Because fewer employees work overnight, those who do have a better chance of getting to know each other and can form special bonds. It doesn’t hurt that the third shift vibe can be particularly quiet and relaxed.
More Time to Further Your Education
Many workers take advantage of a third-shift schedule to go back to school to work on a degree. Alternatively, you could take job-specific training to help develop the skills you need to advance in your career.
