More companies today are using contingent workers, especially since the recent recession. This shift in hiring has helped companies reduce costs. But using temp employees presents its own unique kinds of challenges.
The jobs of contingent workers are temporary, and the company has the challenge of integrating them with the permanent workforce. They may feel like second-class citizens, especially if permanent employees treat them that way. Here are a few things your company can do to help temp workers acclimate to the company and to do their best work.
1. Treat them like regular employees.
As mentioned, temps may feel like outsiders, and so it is the obligation of the company to make them feel welcome and integrate them into the company as much as possible. This attitude starts at the top. Management needs to make clear to all employees that contingent workers should be treated cordially and with respect.
There are other things the company can do as well. It starts during the onboarding process and needs to carry on throughout their time with the company. Make contingent workers a part of all company activities. Invite them to any company gatherings. If employees go out to lunch, invite the temps along. Also, invite them to meetings. Ask for their opinions.
2. Offer recognition for a job well done.
Just as with regular employees, give recognition to contingent employees for exceptional work. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate, but recognizing them will go a long way as an incentive for them to continue doing their best work. You can do this through company email, or at a company meeting. You can reward them with tokens of your appreciation, like tickets to a show or ballgame, or some other reward.
3. Offer bonuses.
This may not be feasible at all companies, but if your company has the resources to do this, give bonuses to temps along with regular employees for exceptional work.
4. Hire them.
It may benefit the company to adopt a policy of hiring temp workers. This is a big incentive. And it is a win-win situation – the temp gets a full-time job, and the company gets a worker who has already proven their worth, someone who is a proven performer and who fits in well with the company culture.
