Time really is money in the workplace. If employees get their jobs and projects done faster, the company saves money (because employees can then go on to another project or task and therefore get more work done in the same amount of time).

Yet some people generally work harder than others most of the time. Others tend to work hard for a day or so – or a week or a month – and then slack off. Everyone does this; it’s human nature.

Yet there are ways – very simple ways – to help improve productivity in your Riverside workplace. Read below for 10 of our favorites.

  1. Make sure all employees are accountable for their projects and assignments. Don’t let employees slack off (although you certainly don’t want to be draconian about it), but let them know you expect certain projects or tasks done by a certain date and let them know the consequences if they miss the deadline.
  2. Make sure, however, that these goals and assignments are reachable within the time frame you set. Nothing can de-motivate a person more from doing something than when he or she knows that success is not possible.
  3. Be available for questions and answer them quickly and happily. Never berate an employee for asking a question. Offer guidance and advice, but don’t back down regarding the deadline (unless truly unforeseen and unpreventable circumstances arise).
  4. Ask for progress reports. These don’t have to be detailed (you even could just go by a worker’s desk to ask how the project is coming along), but check-in periodically with your team members to make sure they’re moving along and offer guidance if they’ve reached a roadblock.
  5. Don’t micro manage. People really dislike being watched all the time. Let your team members know the parameters in which they must complete the task/project and then leave them be to complete it in the manner they see fit.
  6. Reward employees when they meet expectations. Reward them even more when they exceed expectations. Sometimes all it takes is a heartfelt congratulations and thank you. Sometimes a gift certificate to a movie or a nice dinner out – or even a raise/promotion – is more appropriate when employees greatly exceed goals.
  7. As applicable for the project/task, encourage the members of your team to work together. Working as part of something greater than themselves can be a huge motivator for many people.
  8. Aim to keep the monotony out of a task or assignment. You could, for example, rotate people into different tasks. Cross-training and doing new things leads to new skills and helps keep workers engaged and motivated.
  9. Offer employees the chance to go to seminars, take classes, or achieve certification.
  10. Don’t hide in your office. Get out among your employees and talk to them. How do they think a process could be improved? What else would they like to be doing?
