A paycheck is important to your employees, of course. But they also need something more. In fact, they need to hear five things from you, their boss.

Read below to learn what these five things are.

1) Your employees want to know that they make a difference. Not only within your company (and you’re thanking them for their efforts and letting them know how important their hard work is, aren’t you?), but they also need to know that they have an impact beyond your walls.

Let your people know of your company’s volunteer efforts out in the community (and make sure every employee can participate). Provide your workers with customer feedback, especially if this feedback shows how your company improved a customer’s life.

2) Your employees want and need to know the vision you have for your company or department. What do you want to accomplish? Where do you want to “take” your company? Do you have plans to grow it into a multi-national corporation, or are you happy with the status quo and just want to provide the best customer services available in your sector? Whatever your goals are for you firm or department, make sure your employees know it.

3) Why is it important – both to you and to your employees – that you get there? Make sure you tell your workers – and remind them regularly – about the why behind your goals. What excites you about reaching – or exceeding – them? Get their input as to why these goals matter.

4) Let your workers know when you’ll know that you’ve arrived at this goal. For example, how big (or compact) will you be? What products/services will you be offering? What processes will you have in place? Who will be your competitors? Give these benchmarks in detail to your employees so that they have something concrete and visible to shoot for.

5) Finally, perhaps the most important thing you can tell your employees is the answer to “What’s in it for me?” Again, that “what” doesn’t necessarily have to be a higher salary (although no employee will turn it down, we’re sure). What kind of things should “be in it” for your employees? These could be opportunities for advancement, learning new skills, a fun work environment, and so on.
