Effective leadership skills are an essential part of running any successful business. It becomes even more important during a crisis that you have the skills necessary to lead your team through as unscathed as possible. These are the essential leadership skills that every supervisor needs to have.
Address Your Employees’ Emotional Well-Being
Making sure your staff’s emotional needs are met in the workplace is important at all times, but especially during times of crisis. As an employer, you can provide emotional support in a variety of ways including:
- Check–in with employees periodically to make sure they are content with their tasks, workplace policies, etc.
- Be on the lookout for signs that any of your team members may be experiencing emotional distress.
- Provide on-site counseling for employees who may need it.
- Be sensitive to the fact that your employees may have outside stressors that must be handled.
Keep the Lines of Communication Open
One of the most important leadership skills you can exhibit during a crisis is to communicate openly and honestly with your employees. Keep them up-to-date on the state of the company, especially changes that may be on the horizon.
Lead by Example
Do not just tell your employees how to behave in the workplace, show them. Make sure that you are leading by example by following all safety protocols and behaving in a manner that is consistent with company policies. This creates a level of trust with your team members that you have their best interests at heart.
Support a Healthy Work-Life Balance
Employees who have a healthy work-life balance tend to be happier and more productive in the workplace. If possible, offer flex schedules and the option to work remotely when needed. Understand that your staff may have circumstances outside of their control, such as caring for a loved one and they are desperately trying to give 100% to both their professional life and their personal life.
Obtain Feedback from Your Team
There isn’t a roadmap to dealing with a crisis. It takes everyone working together to make it through it. Be sure to get feedback from your employees on what they feel is working, what isn’t, and what changes they think would make the workplace better and safer.
