First Day on Your New Assignment

Look Your Best 

First impressions are everything! Make sure you dress appropriately for your first day, even if it means overdressing. Iron the wrinkles out of your clothes, clean your shoes, and make sure to groom your hair. It shows that you are serious about your new position and representing the company well. 

Arrive at Work Early 

A good rule of thumb is to arrive about 15 minutes prior to when you are scheduled to come in. This gives you time to clear your head, get situated, and be ready to start your day by the time your supervisor expects you. 

Come Prepared to Learn 

You aren’t expected to know everything on your first day. It will serve you well to listen and ask questions. Take notes if you have too. This is a much better approach than coming in and assuming you know how everything works. Coming off as a know-it-all is a quick way to rub your supervisor and fellow team members the wrong way.  

Connect with Your Coworkers 

Your first day will probably feel a little chaotic, so it may be challenging to get to know everyone. However, make an effort to at least introduce yourself to every team member. You may not remember everyone’s name the next day, but the effort will certainly be appreciated and something to build upon 

Use Downtime Wisely 

Chances are, your first day will be drastically different from a typical day. You’re just learning how things work. You may or may not have permissions to the company’s systems yet. The bottom line is you may have downtime. Use it wisely. Do not take it as an opportunity to take a long lunch, run a quick errand, or wander around aimlessly. Take the time to learn more about how the day-to-day operations, complete required onboard training and get your office set up.  

Do Not Dip Out Early 

Show your commitment to your new position and company by offering to stay late to absorb more information or finishing new-hire paperwork. Running out of the door as fast as you can on your first day will not leave a positive impression.
