How to Turn a Temporary Position into a Permanent One

In most cases, you take a temporary position in the hopes that either it will become permanent or you will find a permanent position while working a temp job. In many cases, temp jobs do become permanent. Often employers use temp jobs as a way to vet employees before making a long-term commitment. Let’s look at a few tips on how you can make that temporary position a permanent one and having your employer begging you to stay.

Look the Part

Follow the dress code. It doesn’t matter if your co-workers are lax and take short-cuts. Make sure you are abiding by company policies. This helps you in two ways. The first is that it demonstrates you fit in with the company. Employers are more likely to hire someone permanently if they assimilate well. The second reason is that following the dress code shows that you are taking the job seriously.

Take Time to Get to Know the Company

Do not just go through the motions, learn as much as you can about the company. Research the company’s goals, culture, vision, structure, and values. It shows management that you are invested in the well-being of the company.

Learn How to Complete as Many Tasks as You Can

Temp jobs are a learning opportunity; make the most of it. Take the time to learn as many different roles as you can. If you have the chance, learn tasks outside of your job description. Spend time shadowing employees in other departments if your supervisor allows. The more you know how to do, the more versatile you are, which makes you a valuable employee.

Make Your Intentions Clear

Make sure your supervisor knows you are interested in a permanent position. Also convey that you are grateful and content as a temp employee, but should the opportunity ever present itself, you would jump at the chance to work for the company full-time.

Get to Know the Permanent Team

Build relationships and get to know the permanent employees you work with. This helps you mesh well with the existing team and allows your supervisor to see how well you fit in. If you build great relationships with your co-workers, they might very well put in a good word for you

Perfect Your Soft Skills

Hard skills are essential but can be taught. Soft skills are invaluable but aren’t as easily taught. Make sure you always show up on time, offer to stay late if needed, have excellent communication skills, and be easy to get along with. Always exhibit exceptional customer service.
