Why You Should Take That Interview Even if You Are Not Looking for a New Job

You may find, especially in this tight labor market, that you are invited to interview for a job even though you have no interest in the position or may not even be looking for employment. Your first instinct may be to simply decline the offer, but that would be a mistake. There are actually some great benefits to be gained from going to a job interview even if you are not interested in the job. Here are a few.

You get to practice.

No matter how much you prepare for a job interview, there is no substitute for the real thing. By going to the interview, you get to hone your skills under actual interview conditions. You will learn how you perform and react, showing you areas where you may be weak and where you need to practice and improve.

And you may discover situations you are completely unaware of. For example, employers may have you take personality or other types of skill tests, or give you a work assignment to do. If you have not interviewed for a while, you may not be aware of the trends and what employers are doing.

The more actual interviews you do, the more you are exposed to different types of situations, different challenges and different people, all of which will better prepare you for when you are interviewing for a job you really want.

You may like the job.

It may turn out that by going to the interview and seeing the company, you may actually like what you see. After talking with the people and learning more about the job, you may fall in love with it. It is difficult to get a really good picture of a job just from the job description. And so another reason to take the interview is to learn more about the company, and you may like what you see.

You can learn…a lot!

By going to the interview, you will also get a better idea of what hiring managers are looking for. They might focus on a certain area of your resume or on a particular skill set. This may help you in preparing for other interviews, knowing what to focus on that will capture an employer’s interest.

Finally, through the questions you ask, you will gain information about how the company operates, knowledge that may help you in doing your own job.
