Does Your Current Company Know Your True Value?

You do your job well, usually exceeding performance expectations. You contribute ideas to improve operations at the company, and you work on your professional development through additional training.

This may be enough to get you noticed. On the other hand, you may find yourself getting passed over for promotions, your good work going unrecognized beyond that of your immediate supervisor. If this is the case, what can you do to get more exposure and raise your visibility within the company? Here are a few ideas.

  1. Work on your elevator pitch

This is something job seekers generally are advised to do. The elevator pitch is a short, 20 to 30-second talk where you tell who you are, what you are working on, and an important achievement. You should have it memorized. It may come in handy should you happen to get into an elevator with a senior executive who is amenable to a friendly chat until arriving at his or her floor.

  1. Chat with supervisors during office social events

Again, have your elevator pitch ready at hand and introduce yourself to bosses at social events, where it is easier to mingle.

  1. Volunteer

Volunteer for events at the company — United Way drives, company picnics or the Christmas party. This can help you increase your exposure, especially if you are working with upper-level management on these events.

  1. Write for industry publications

This is another good way to enhance your professional reputation and gain more exposure. Look for publications in your industry and profession that you can contribute to. Examine the kinds of articles that appear in these publications and then submit your own.

  1. Volunteer for an office at a professional organization

For example, you could volunteer to act as treasurer, secretary or some other position. These are generally offices that the organization has a more difficult time filling.

  1. Moderate a presentation

Often at professional conferences there are panel discussions. You can offer to moderate one of these discussions, which will also increase your recognition. Or you might offer to introduce a speaker.

  1. Offer your services as a speaker

There may be community groups or other organizations that are interested in learning about your industry or profession. You can offer to speak at one of these gatherings.
