What is the First Impression You Send Hiring Managers?

First impressions are important. People form judgments about others very quickly based on what they see. The same is true for hiring managers. They make decisions based on intuition more often than they would like to admit.

So, the first impression you make when you walk into the interview is very important. Here are a few ways to make sure it is a positive one.

1. Attire

How you dress is going to make a big first impression. So, you want to make sure it is professional – a suit and tie for a man, and a business suit for a woman. You should also be neatly groomed. Watch especially the shoes and fingernails. Make sure the shoes are polished and that your fingernails are neatly trimmed.

If you can afford a tailor-made suit, all the better. People immediately judge those in tailor-made suits for being more successful than others with off-the-rack attire. It only takes five seconds for people to make that judgment.

2. Eyes

People who make eye contact are perceived by others as being more intelligent. People who wear glasses are also regarded as being more intelligent, as well as those who speak more emphatically. People who avoid direct eye contact are seen as timid or evasive.

3. Body language

This is a lot more important than people believe. Again, people make quick judgments just by the way you move. For example, a person who walks with a more open and relaxed gait is perceived as being more extroverted and more willing to take risks. Those who take shorter, more penguin-like steps are imagined to be more apprehensive and uptight. And people form these impressions after seeing just a few steps.

If you hide your hands during the interview, people are quick to assume that you are hiding something, that you are secretive. They also get this impression if you hold your hands with the palms down. Having your palms up, on the other hand, shows openness and honesty.

Another behavior that gives a positive first impression is smiling, which people perceive as a friendly, welcoming gesture.
