Four Ways to Get a Promotion

People are often unsure about what they have to do to move on to the next level. They are really good in their current role with the company and think they can handle the next step. What will get them promoted? Here are a few tips on getting promoted from the supervisors themselves.

1. Do Your Job Well.

This probably comes as no surprise. But the fact remains that you will never get promoted if you are not performing well in your current position. You need to make sure you know exactly what your duties are, what kind of expectations your supervisor has for the job, and then, if you can, exceed, not just meet those expectations.

You also need to go above and beyond. That means looking for opportunities to volunteer for other projects, asking how you can help the company to reach its goals. Take the initiative to come up with ideas on your own for improvements in the way things are done, and then putting those ideas into practice. Make sure that you are the one offering solutions to problems, rather than complaining about obstacles to getting things done. Nobody likes a complainer.

2. Be Prepared to Challenge Your Supervisor.

When you think your supervisor is wrong about something, or about to make a mistake, don’t be afraid to let them know. When you do, however, be prepared to support your position with a cogent argument, and even more importantly, facts and figures to back up your position. The proper place for that feedback comes in their office and not in front of the entire staff at the weekly meeting. Embarrassing a superior’s decisions can lead to the opposite of your intended effect.

3. Don’t Be a Squeaky Wheel.

As mentioned, nobody likes a complainer, so if you want to get promoted, don’t be one. You may not be thrilled about some assignments you get, or who you have to work with, but griping about them to your boss is not going to help. Your job is to make your supervisor’s job easier, not to add more headaches to it. Research shows optimistic people get more promotions.

4. Don’t Act Entitled.

OK, so you are a top performer, really making things happen. You may believe you deserve to be promoted, but don’t walk around and act like your supervisor owes you a promotion. That kind of arrogance won’t sit well with anybody.

One good reason to not act entitled – supervisors look at more than just performance, but personality as well – your professionalism, motivation, thoughtfulness, perspective and judgment. Arrogance doesn’t really fit in too well with those qualities.
