Investing in Your Employees to Ensure Long-Term Organizational Success

Businesses naturally want to find the best people they can, those with the skills, knowledge and experience to help move the companies forward. They put a lot of effort into the hiring process to find the right person – series of interviews, tests, even assigning projects to candidates.

But once the person has been hired, companies tend to lose interest in maintaining and developing those candidates they were so eager to acquire. Employee development programs rank generally pretty low on the priority list. This is unfortunate, because the result of this neglect is that companies lose their top young talent.

These young employees become restless when they see that the company is not doing much about their career advancement and career development. Then they begin to look elsewhere. Why do companies give employee development such short shrift? There are several reasons.

Most businesses are focused on the present.

In the current climate, where quarterly earnings run the show, and companies are trying to do more with less, the focus is on the here and now. Companies are less than eager to look down the road for something that doesn’t have an immediate benefit.

Businesses plan but don’t carry through.

Companies may do a lot of planning around employee development, but without support from company leadership, the plans tend to wither.

But career development is something businesses need to emphasize for a variety of reasons. It matters a lot to most people to work at a company that supports their growth and development. It also builds employee loyalty to a company, as well as building employee engagement, both of which contribute to productivity.

Supervisors focus more on the short term.

Moreover, employee development initiatives really do not require a huge investment of time or money. What is most important for employee development are supervisors who take a real interest in the careers of their workers, supervisors who take the time to find out the goals, needs and aspirations of their workers. Once they have determined these things, they can work to find ways to meet these needs, through activities such as mentoring, coaching, or on-the-job training.

Such career development is an investment that will pay big dividends in attracting and retaining the best people; while neglecting such training will usually result in losing them.
