Is Your First Impression Hindering Your Hiring Chances?

Everyone knows how stressful job interviews can be. You obviously want to make a good impression.

Research has shown that most people form an impression of a person in about 30 seconds. It may not be a very reliable way to take the measure of a new acquaintance, but it is just the way we are wired. So, during an interview, you want to make sure you make a good first impression, because it will set the tone for the entire meeting.

How can you make a good first impression? There are several things you can do.

Be Punctual

The first is to make sure you arrive on time. Being late will put you at a disadvantage right away as far as the impression you make on the hiring manager. You don’t want to arrive too early either, because this also does not create a good impression. Generally, getting to the interview about 10 to 15 minutes early will suffice.

Dress Professionally

To make a good first impression, watch how you dress. This may vary depending on the kind of company. For more traditional businesses, you should wear a suit and tie. For certain industries, however, it may actually be better to dress more casually, at an IT startup, for example.

In all cases, make sure you are well groomed – no five-o’clock shadow on your face, hair neatly trimmed and combed. Make sure your fingernails are clean. Also, check your shoes to make sure they are not scuffed. Your clothing should be neatly pressed. Check for frayed edges or missing buttons.

Watch Your Body Language

Another thing to watch for a good first impression is body language. When you greet the hiring manager, offer a firm handshake, smile, and look the person in the eye. Watch your posture. Make sure you stand and sit straight. No slouching. Watch that you don’t fidget, and avoid repeated movements that may become distracting, things like twirling your hair, or drumming your fingers.

You want to project an image of poise and confidence, so as stressful as the situation may be, try to relax. Deep breathing is one good way to calm down. Come prepared with a few topics for small talk before the interview begins. If you have done your research, you may know a few things about the hiring manager, what he or she is interested in, and they will make good starting points for conversation.
