Top 10 Questions to Prepare for Your Next Job Interview

As you prepare for your job interview, you’re going to need to have great answers to popular job interview questions such as:

  • What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
  • What would your former/current boss say are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

Here are 10 questions you should ask an interviewer:

  1. Why is this position open? (This lets you know if the person who held the position was promoted or if it’s a new position. Both answers are good news.)
  2. What is the first thing/are the first things you’ll want the person whom you choose for the position do in the first three months on the job? (This lets you know what the hiring manager’s priorities are, allowing you to speak to how your skills and background can help.)
  3. If you could create the perfect person for this position, what skills would he or she have?
  4. What type of personality would the person have?
  5. What growth opportunities (promotions) are in line with this position?
  6. What is the career projection for this position?
  7. What’s your management style?
  8. How long have your team members been working here/with you?
  9. What are your goals for the department? How does this position contribute to meeting those goals?
  10.  Now that we’ve met, what do you think of my candidacy? (This lets the hiring manager tell you where you’re weak – in his or her eyes – and allows you to speak to those perceptions and perhaps overcome them.)

You also should ask about then next steps in the hiring process. This question comes near the end of the interview. It gives you a timeframe as to when a decision will be made and helps you plan out your follow up.
