5 Ways to Motivate Your Millennial Employees

Did you know that members of the Millennial Generation (those individuals now between the ages of about 18-35) will make up more than half the workforce by 2020? In fact, they’ll be making up 36 percent of the workforce by next year (2104)!

Yet this generation is notorious for its unwillingness (inability?) to stay in a job for more than a year or three years, let alone five or more.

So how do you help these individuals stay at your company (so that you can reap the benefits of the knowledge and experience they’ll pick up while in your employ), instead of seeing them take what they’ve learned at your company to benefit a competitor?

Read below for five tips on how to motivate this generation of workers.

  1. Millennials hate to wait for promotions; they’ll often leave you because they can get a better job, with a better title and more pay from another company. So, while people truly should work for a company three to five years before seeing a significant promotion, consider offering “in-between” promotions and titles. This will help their managers meet this generation’s desire/need for quick career progression.
  2. This is a generation that believes in giving back to others. Does your company offer a way for this cohort of employees to participate in community/charitable events? Is your firm committed to giving back, as well?
  3. If possible, offer more flexibility as to where and even when work is expected to be done. Millennials have a hard time understanding the idea of “face time” when an Internet connection can work to get done from just about anywhere. If you can, see about offering everyone (not just Millennials) at your company the opportunity to work from home, have flexible hours, and so on.
  4. Give Millennials the chance to pursue additional education, credentials, etc.
  5. Let them work on projects of their choosing. So long as they get the jobs done that you need to get done, why not let employees work on projects they choose themselves? This helps them become more engaged, take self-generated initiative and also can increase innovation within your firm.

What has your company done to help keep Millennials – or any employee “generation” – planning to stick around at your company for more than just a couple of years? Has it been successful; are employees staying with your firm?
