How to Find Your Next Great Recruiter

There’s an art as well as a science to recruiting.

The art: great recruiters know how to “read” people. They know how to get the little details that matter from a hiring manager in order to find out what the hiring manager truly needs and is looking for in a candidate. They know how to interview candidates to ascertain an individual’s true values, goals and what makes the candidate “tick.”

The science: great recruiters know how to use the technological tools available today to source, vet and place great candidates. They’re not afraid of the phone…and they know how to use it!

What other traits should you be looking for when you’re ready to hire a recruiter?

Read below for our take.

  • As hinted at above, great recruiters love to get to know people. They’re great about asking questions that get to the heart of what you’re looking for in a candidate and they’re great at getting at what motivates a candidate. Great recruiters are relationship builders. Whether speaking with a candidate or client company, great recruiters are in it to build a relationship that will last a lifetime.
  • Great recruiters are honest. They won’t lie to candidates or clients just to get the placement or the staffing assignment. If the staffing firm doesn’t have positions that match a candidate’s needs and skills sets, the recruiter will say so. If the recruiter doesn’t have experience sourcing IT professionals and IT professionals are what the company needs, the recruiter will say so – and help the company find a recruiter who does.
  • Great recruiters send out e-mails to individuals, one at a time. They don’t send out one e-mail describing a position to dozens of potential candidates and they don’t blast client companies with e-mails touting “great” candidates. Great recruiters know to send out individual e-mails “selling” a job or a candidate to candidates/client companies only when a truly great candidate comes into a recruiter’s orbit or when a terrific opportunity closely fits a candidate’s career goals and skills.
  • LinkedIn is a wonderful tool and has helped make sourcing and vetting candidates much easier than it was just five years ago. Yet great recruiters don’t need LinkedIn to find great candidates. Even if LinkedIn were to disappear tomorrow, great recruiters would still be able to source and create relationships with terrific candidates.
