Motivating Temporary Workers

If you bring in temporary workers – and almost every business does at some point – here are some tips to help you keep them motivated and productive.

  1. Remember that temporary workers are just like your regular workers – they want to feel they are making a contribution and that their work is valued. And, whether the worker is providing crucial accounting services at tax time or stocking your shelves during a busy period, he or she is providing you with a vital business need – otherwise you wouldn’t have needed to bring a temporary worker on board.
  2.  Begin with a plan in mind. Have a clear goal that you want the worker to achieve. Have a detailed job description. Your expectations and goals should be realistic. You also should be certain that the person is being paid competitively for the work you expect him or her to perform. After all, there’s nothing that says failure is inevitable unless the worker knows exactly what’s expected of him or her – and failure is one of the greatest de-motivators around!
  3.  Hire right. Take the time to make sure the person has the skills to do the job. If the individual will be working at your company for a few weeks, ask to interview some top candidates already vetted by your staffing service. It your service isn’t sending you qualified people, communicate with this with the firm’s recruiters and be sure to give them detailed skills and qualifications.
  4. When the temporary worker arrives, give him or her a tour of the area where he or she will be working (possibly even a tour of the whole company). Be sure to show the worker where the break room and bathrooms are. State when break times happen, etc. Treat the worker with the same respect you’d give to any “regular” employee. Compliment him or her when a job is done well; offer constructive criticism and guidance when warranted
  5. Before bringing temporary workers on board, let your regular employees know why and when you’re going to do so. Ask them for their input, especially if they are doing the type of job the temporary worker will perform – they can tell you what type of skills, personality and background are best for the tasks at hand.
