New Job Possibilities in a New Year – Five Steps to Changing Your Career

Are you tired of your current job? Thinking maybe it’s time for something new? If thoughts of a new career have been running around your mind, here are a few things to consider about making a career change.

  1. Consider your current situation

You have to ask yourself exactly why you are dissatisfied with your current job. It could be that it has become rather boring and routine, with little chance for any kind of change. Or it could be something more concrete, like not getting along with coworkers or your boss, or not making enough money. Is it something general or a specific problem causing your unease? If something specific, would taking care of that problem solve your dilemma about a career change?

Would taking on more responsibilities help, or moving to another department?

  1. Do a self-assessment

In other words, think about your own state of mind. What are your goals in a career – money, authority, challenge? Think about your skills and knowledge. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Is your current job making the best use of your skills? What kind of job would?

  1. Explore other careers

This involves a good deal of research. You can go online to search other careers that may interest you, as well as reaching out to friends and colleagues who may be in those careers for information. You can conduct informational interviews to learn more about particular careers.

  1. Job shadow

Another way to get information about a career is to shadow someone on the job. This is a great way to find out what the job actually entails, what the day-to-day duties and responsibilities are, what the job is really like. Another good way to find out what the job is like is to do volunteer work in a similar kind of job.

The important thing is to get a realistic view of what the job is actually like before you jump in and make the switch.

  1. Get the training you need

Ideally, you will be able to apply the skills you already have to your new career, to use your strengths. But you may need to acquire some new skills as well.  There are a number of ways to do this. You can take a class or go online for training. You might also be able to find a mentor who can help you. Volunteering is also another good way to learn a job.
