Because of the strong economy, the demand for skilled tradespeople is greater than ever before, especially in the Inland Empire. As the name implies, these jobs require specialized skills and knowledge, which can make them lucrative careers.

Here is a short list of the skilled trades jobs with the highest pay, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

 

  1. Construction Manager

A construction manager plans and supervises construction projects from beginning to end. He or she also is responsible for project budgeting. The average hourly pay is about $44.

  1. Power Line Technician

These people install and repair cables or wires that are part of electrical power or distribution systems. As part of their job, they may also set up transmission poles and towers. Their average pay is about $33 an hour.

  1. Aircraft Mechanic

These workers repair and perform maintenance work on aircraft. Their average pay is about $30 an hour.

  1. Electrical and Electronics Repairers for Commercial and Industrial Equipment

Electronics repairers repair, test, adjust and install electronic equipment, including industrial controls, transmitters and antennas. They average $28 an hour.

  1. Oil and Gas Rotary Drill Operator

They set up and operate different types of drills for the purpose of obtaining oil and gas. They also help to remove core samples of earth for testing as part of oil and gas exploration. Their average pay is $27 an hour.

  1. Machine Tool Programmer

These workers develop programs that control the machining and processing of metal or plastic parts, work that is done by automatic machine tools, equipment or systems. Their average pay is also about $27 an hour.

  1. Crane or Tower Operator

These people control mechanical boom and cable or tower and cable equipment to move things. They also make about $27 an hour.

  1. Millwright

Millwrights install, move or take apart machinery and heavy equipment following specific layout plans, blueprints and other drawings. Their average pay is about $27 an hour.

  1. Pipefitter

Pipefitters install and repair pipes that move liquids and gases. They work in factories, businesses, and homes. Their average pay is about $25 an hour.
