1. Why do you want this job?
The candidate should be able to give you a compelling reason of why he or she is interested in the job, as opposed to a job anywhere else. If the person cannot give you a good answer to this question, it raises concerns about whether the person would be a very good employee.
2. Why do you want to work here as opposed to another similar company?
This will tell you if the candidate has done his research about your company and really wants to work there or simply looking for a job, any job.
3. A key skill you need for this job is —–. Can you tell me how you acquired this skill and how you used it at your previous company?
This will help you to get an idea of the kind of experience the candidate has using an important skill for the job.
4. Why are you leaving your current job?
You may find some information here that could raise some red flags. Knowing why they are leaving a job may help you to know if the person will be a good fit for the position.
5. Questions to clarify information on the resume
If there is anything on the resume that is not clear, or that you want more information about, such as specific skills or job experience, the phone interview is a good place to delve a little deeper into the person’s background.
