Generally, when hiring managers are looking to fill a position, experience is one of the key things they look for. It is among the most important qualifications, with good reason. But it may not always be the best course of action.
If a hiring manager is looking for new ideas, a fresh perspective, new ways of thinking and approaching problems, a person with no experience may prove more worthwhile than going with a veteran. Here are some reasons why.
Avoiding tired thinking
Someone with a lot of experience may have fallen into some stale routines, doing things the same way, using the same methods and processes. They are likely going to do things the way they have always done them. They have a settled routine. So, you are not likely to get someone who is going to question the way things are done.
Someone with no experience, on the other hand, is more likely to question why things are done a certain way.
Getting a different perspective
Someone coming from another industry will bring a fresh perspective to the job. They will examine problems from a different vantage point and as a result will see new opportunities and solutions.
Managers are challenged
Dealing with someone lacking experience is probably a new situation for the manager as well, a learning experience. The manager will not be able to train the newcomer as the manager normally does. The manager too will be forced out of his comfort zone, having to confront questions, problems and situations he has not dealt with for a long time.
Hiring someone with no experience will bring diversity to the work team. There are different kinds of diversity. Most people think of diversity as people of different cultures, races, or genders. But what is most important is diversity of thinking, putting people together who see things differently, who approach problems from different perspectives. And that is what you get when you hire someone without experience – a person who thinks differently.
Loyalty, work ethic
If you hire a person without experience, he or she is likely to be more loyal because he understands the opportunity he is being given. For the same reason, he is likely to work harder to prove himself.
