Quick Tips for Showing Your Boss You Deserve a Raise

Most people believe that getting a raise hinges on how they present their case to the boss, that it all boils down to one meeting and the discussion that takes place at that meeting. But the meeting itself is really unimportant compared to all that comes before it – your performance on a day-to-day basis, and, specifically, how your performance aligns with the expectations of your boss. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you want that raise.

1. Satisfy your boss

This is the most important tip by far. Keep your boss happy. Figure what he or she wants – what will please him the most – and do it. In the end, nothing else is important compared to this. You may have your own ideas about how you should do the job, but that doesn’t matter. Find out how your boss wants the job done.

You need to find out what really matters to your boss, what he or she really thinks is important, and then do that. The key here is to make your supervisor look good, to make his or her job easier.

2. You need to conform to the boss

This is a one-way street – if there are differences, you need to be the one to change. Don’t try to convince your boss your way is better. You need to change to meet your boss’s expectations.

3. Connect with your boss regularly

You cannot make an impact with your boss if he or she doesn’t know you are around. Have regular meetings with him, so you can stay up to date with what he wants and he knows what you are doing. If your boss does not reach out, you need to take the initiative here.

And then, you need to let your boss know what you have been doing, what you have accomplished. If you find out what matters to your boss, and then accomplish that, you are on your way.

4. Keep your boss informed

Make sure there are no surprises, that your boss knows everything that is going on all the time. A sure way to get into trouble is to keep your boss out of the loop.

5. If all this doesn’t work, move on

If you are doing all these things, and your efforts are still not appreciated, it’s time to look elsewhere.
