Breathe New Life into a Stagnant Job Search with These Strategies

Your job search is in the doldrums. You haven’t been making much progress. You send out resumes but are not getting interviews. You need to stop treading water and get moving again. Here are some things to help you reignite your job search.

1. Maintain a positive attitude.

Attitude is important. It is what keeps you going. If you allow your attitude to turn negative, it will destroy your confidence. So, you need to avoid dwelling on what is going wrong and focus on the things that are going right. Remember that your attitude is a choice you make. Focus on your abilities, your accomplishments, what you have to offer, and what you are trying to achieve.

2.Take care of yourself.

You need to stay in good health. That means getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise. All of this will help to improve your physical, mental and emotional well-being. It will help you to better deal with stress, to think more clearly, focus more intently, even improve memory. You will have more energy and be less prone to illness.

Rest, diet and exercise also help you to recharge and recover, which is important to maintain resilience in the face of adversity.

3. Your effort is more important than amount of time

Some career counselors say that searching for a job should be a full-time job in itself. And it is true that you do need to devote a good deal of time to the search. But more important than time is the effort that you put into it.

If you spend too much time on the job search, you risk burnout, which only diminishes your effectiveness. You need to schedule a certain amount of time each day that you will devote to your job search – morning is usually best – and then stick to that schedule. Don’t let the job search take over your life. You should maintain a balance.

4. Get organized and be precise

Set goals – long-term and short-term. What is your overall goal? Then set goals for what you want to achieve each week and each day, and be specific. Make a to-do list and prioritize your tasks.

Be clear about what job you want and how you are going to go about getting it. Sending out mass mailings of resumes in a scattershot approach is not going to work.

5. Constantly monitor your progress

In other words, you need to continually evaluate your efforts, to look at what is working and what is not, and make changes where needed.

6. Try not to let rejection bother you.

You know that it will happen, so you need to take it in stride. The important thing is to learn from your rejection and use what you learn to make your job search more effective.
