Three Books to Make You a More Effective Leader

There are hundreds of leadership books in print today. Leadership is a topic that has been studied intensely because it is so important. And it is something that has been difficult to define. Here are three books that are among the most well-known leadership studies, with insights that have set the agenda for the study of leadership.

1. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven R. Covey

This book is one of the most well-known in the world of self help. In it, Covey gives advice about prioritization, empathy, self-renewal, and other topics. His views are both insightful and practical. It is a great book for both personal and professional development.

In the book, he talks about how to be effective in reaching goals. You do this, he says, by linking those goals to the ethical principles that define good character, principles that are universal and timeless.

2. True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership by Bill George

This is a book about being an authentic leader. George conducted more than 100 interviews with all kinds of leaders before writing the book. In it, he gives advice to leaders on knowing themselves and then applying that knowledge to a set of principles for leadership.

George writes in the book that people can discover their authentic leadership right away, that people do not have to be born with the characteristics of a leader, that people do not have to wait for others when becoming a true leader, that people can take the reins and lead at any time in their lives, and that leadership is a choice.

3. On Becoming a Leader by Warren Bennis

This is a classic by one of the true pioneers of leadership studies. In the book, Bennis says leaders really don’t have the need to prove themselves, but rather, the need to express themselves.

Becoming a leader means learning constantly and remaining always curious, having an energizing vision, knowing how to communicate that vision, knowing how to deal with uncertainty and risk, having personal integrity, thinking original ideas, using what you have learned and adapting it to your needs, taking time to think and reflect, believing in yourself, and seeing success in small everyday accomplishments.
