Five Mistakes You Can’t Make in the Interview

Job interviews are stressful, as just about everyone knows. So, you don’t want to add to the stress by making mistakes that can be easily avoided. Here are some interview mistakes that could very well knock you out of contention for the job, but can be easily avoided with a little preparation and awareness.

1. Being late for the interview

This definitely will put you in a bind with the hiring manager. Showing up late raises all sorts of red flags. It shows a lack of preparation and carelessness. If you cannot get to the job interview on time, how will you handle getting to work every day on time?

So, don’t get off on the wrong foot. Make sure you arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes early.

2. Not dressing appropriately

Now, there may be some Silicon Valley start ups that won’t mind if you show up in jeans and a t-shirt, but for just about every other company, you should still wear a suit and tie. And make sure you are well groomed – hair neatly combed, fingernails clean, clean shaven.

3. Acting jittery

As mentioned, interviews are stressful situations, especially when you know that everything you do and say is being evaluated. Nonetheless, you have to show poise and confidence. You need to greet the hiring manager with a smile and a firm handshake. You need to look him or her in the eye. You need to sit erect. And you need to avoid nervous behavior such as tapping a finger, biting a fingernail, or playing with your hair.

4. Not asking questions about the job

If you do not ask questions about the job, the hiring manager will begin to wonder how prepared you are and how interested you really are in the job. It is best to come to the interview with questions in mind that you will be able to ask.

5. Not researching the company

This will knock you out of the running right away. This is one thing that you absolutely must do. You need to find out as much as you can about the company so you can talk intelligently during the interview about how you will be able to contribute to the firm and add value.
