When Does Your Job Search Become Stale?

You have been looking for a job for a few months, but so far have not received any offers. There have been a few interviews, but without any results. You continue to send out resumes and network, but nothing has materialized.

You seem to have hit a dead end. Are the wheels coming off your job search? Are you doing the wrong things or just not doing the things that you should? There are signs that you should be aware of that your job search is heading south. Here are few provided by career counselors and how to handle the problems.

1. Your outlook is turning negative.

The glass is looking half empty instead of half full. If people give you advice, you ignore it, for the most part, believing that it will do little good – you tell them that you have done it already and it didn’t work.

This is just an attitude adjustment problem. You need to keep an open mind about things. When other people offer advice, take the time to listen to it even though you may have heard it before. If you are constantly hearing the same things, that should tell you something, namely, that it could be true and advice you should follow.

Another thing to think about if the search is going wrong – are you blaming other people instead of taking responsibility yourself for your search?

2. You are not aggressive enough.

You are not taking the initiative to make things happen. For example, have you taken the time to develop an overall strategy for your job search, or are you making things up as you go along? Have you looked for someone who can act as a career coach or mentor for your job search, or are you just doing it all by yourself? Do you follow up on leads and interviews even if you have not heard from the employer? If you aren’t doing these things, you are not being aggressive enough.

3. Your performances during interviews have been lackluster.

In some cases, you have made it to the final round but never get the job offer. You find yourself wishing that you had mentioned certain examples or other information during interviews. If this is happening repeatedly, after the interview write down what you wanted to say, and then include that in your thank-you letter to the interviewer.
