Get Your Team to Focus on the Process and Watch the Results Flow

When you and your team have a new project, the first thing on the agenda is looking at goals. What is the project intended to achieve? That can be a bit daunting (or even overwhelming) at first. You may wonder how you are ever going to get to the finish line successfully.

The way to get there is to naturally have a well thought-out plan, a process in place for reaching your goals. And, you may have some approach or method in mind, something that you have used in the past that worked for you. But projects are not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Can you be sure that the methods used in the past are the best approach to take?

Your first step should be to take a look at how you will tackle this challenge. Taking a look at the challenge from different perspectives, or even taking a new approach, can produce better results. Instead of just diving right into the project and following your old game plan, you and your team could devote more time to preparation. It does require a more effort, but the results of that preparation can be well worth the investment.

To help improve your team’s performance, there are several things you can do to create a great plan that focuses on the processes and gets your team to stay on track for reaching the goal at the finish line.

1. Discuss your project with co-workers from different departments in the company. Find people who work in separate areas from you and learn how they attack projects. If you work in accounting, talking to someone in IT could lead to a new technique you never considered that applies perfectly to your project.

2. Plan out your project by using a different technique. For example, if you usually work from an outline or list, switch to using some kind of visual representation, mind mapping or ballooning. Your team could be excited to try a new visual technique.

3. Begin by outlining exactly what you want to achieve with the project, and then work in reverse to figure out what you need to do to reach the goal. Putting together smaller goals to reach the big goal at the end will help your team stay motivated and not get discouraged.

4. Map out the project with post-it notes and stick them on a wall to give you a visual representation of what you need to do. Crossing off what’s been accomplished gives a sense of accomplishment, and your team will look forward to those mini goals.

5. Consider what obstacles you will run into when doing your project, then, as a team, work to develop solutions to these problems. You can’t anticipate every problem, but using your past experience and knowledge of the industry can lead to avoiding as many potential landmines as possible.

This is just a short list. You and your team could probably develop more thoughts on new approaches. Taking that little extra time in planning could produce a big change in results.
