When Do You Bring Someone Back to Your Organization?

In the past, people would stay with companies a lot longer than they do today, sometimes for their entire career. That is no longer the case, especially for younger workers. In today’s economy, people are much more apt to jump around in search of new opportunities.

Workers will even sometimes return to a company that they left. These people have been given the name boomerang job candidates, for obvious reasons. They have worked at a firm, left, worked elsewhere for a period of time, and then applied to return to their previous company.

This creates some issues to think about for companies. Should your company hire such a person? The key issue here is why he or she left in the first place. Did he go because he could not get along with a supervisor or coworker? Did he leave because he just didn’t like the way the company was run? In other words, if the person didn’t leave under the best of circumstances, the company might want to think long and hard before rehiring the person.

On the other hand, if the person was a good worker, and left to pursue new career challenges, for example, you may want to consider taking him or her back because he can really be a benefit to your company for several reasons.

1. He is a known quantity.
You know this person. You know what kind of worker he is. So, you know exactly what you are getting in terms of work ethic, skills, knowledge, and experience. Plus, since the person has already worked at the company, you know that he fits in with the culture.

2. She won’t need training.
The person already knows how things work at the company, its policies and procedures. So, it won’t take much in terms of training to get the person up to speed.

3. Odds are he will stay longer than most people.
You might wonder, this person left before, what is to stop him from taking off again? But the reverse is actually true. First of all, he knows the company. He knows what he is getting into, having worked there before. There will be no misconceptions. Plus, he knows what else is out there, having worked at other places, and he has chosen to return, which is actually a vote of confidence in your company.

4. She can really add to productivity.
This person is coming back to you with more experience and skills that he has picked up working elsewhere, things that he will bring to his job with you. He brings with him ideas and insights he picked up at other places, and may bring along clients and customers as well.
