It’s a New Year. How to Tell if You Are Ready for a New Job

You may have been in your job for a relatively short time, or for a longer period. You may like your job, you may dislike it, or you may not have strong feelings one way or the other. But, no matter your present circumstances, you probably have long-range career plans. The question is, how does your current job fit into those plans? Have you gone as far as you can go in your current position or with your current employer? Is it time to leave? Here are a few signs that it may be time for a new job.

1. Inertia has taken over.

Some career experts counsel that if you want to advance your career, you need to start looking for a new job after three years. If you haven’t been promoted or given any new responsibilities during that time, it is a sign to move on. Economic conditions or personal situations can play a part in that, but it’s important to keep your career moving.

2. There is little communication.

If you don’t hear much from your supervisor – whether it’s good or bad – it may be another sign that you need to make a move. Good supervisors will give you advice and guidance and provide ongoing comments about your performance. They will take an active interest in your career development. If this isn’t happening, you may need to look elsewhere.

3. You are not gaining any new skills or experience.

If things have simply become routine, if you are not acquiring any new knowledge or skills, but doing the same things, again, this may signal that it is time to leave the job. Some of that development needs to be your own initiative by reading articles, attending webinars or getting books. If your employer isn’t helping with that development, it might be a sign you aren’t in the long-term plans for advancement.

4. People are leaving the company frequently.

If you see people heading for the exits routinely because they are unhappy with their jobs, it is a good sign you should follow them out the door. Constant turnover is a sign with problems at the company. Take a step back and think about why people are leaving. Is it because they don’t like a direct supervisor or because the culture of the employer is toxic?

5. The company reorganizes frequently.

This is another sign that all is not well at the firm. It could be a sign that there are problems with the leadership or the company is not sure what direction to take. Whatever the case, it is not best environment in which to advance your career.
