1. Learn the safety standards

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is the agency responsible for setting and enforcing safety standards in the workplace. So, the first step is to find out what the standards are for your industry.

These standards cover things like safety exits, ventilation, hazardous materials, protective equipment, first aid and fire safety. In addition to standards that apply to your particular industry, OSHA also has standards for a safe workplace in general, and businesses need to adhere to these as well.

2. Get help

To develop a good safety policy there are places you can turn to for help. One is your insurance carrier. They have a lot of experience in this area. They will be eager to help you because having a safety policy will mean fewer accident claims for them.

Also, OSHA and state safety agencies can offer help, so you can contact them as well. And finally, other organizations can assist too – the chamber of commerce, for example, or industry trade associations. They offer training programs and materials to help set up a safety program.

It is also a good idea to talk to your employees and get their opinions about safety practices and procedures. Your employees are in the middle of your workplace each day, and there’s nothing that can replace actual experience for what could be deemed an unsafe environment.

3. Write it down.

After you have developed your safety guidelines, you need to put them in a company safety manual, so that they are available to all workers and management and everyone is working from the same page.

Safety manuals contain information such as what to do if there is a fire, explosion, or natural disaster.
